In the same rhythm: our company rowing activity

On Friday, July 11, we traded in our laptops for oars at Zooma. An active team building day on the water, conceived and led by colleague Nick. What started as a company outing ended as a lesson in rhythm, strength and cooperation.

At Zooma, we think it is important that employees' ideas are given the opportunity to be brought to life. When Nick, an fanatic rower at Asopos in Leiden, suggested organizing a rowing workshop, we immediately said yes. Not only because it is sporty and different, but also because it shows exactly how we work as a team through good communication and with trust in each other.

On the day itself

Around 15:00 we gathered in Leiden, where three enthusiastic Asopos members were waiting for us. In two groups we started with strength and technique training on rowing machines. Under Nick's guidance we tested who could deliver the most power. In short; a kind of mini-competition with guaranteed muscle pain.

Then came the second part: rowing in an indoor boat on the water, surrounded by mirrors. You immediately saw your technique, and had to interact perfectly as a team. Who pulls too early? Who misses the rhythm? In groups of four, it quickly became clear: rowing is teamwork in its purest form.

Then it was time for the real thing. Into the boats, onto the canal. With an experienced rower as captain setting the rhythm, we took on the challenge. Bridges, balance, managing other boat traffic, it took some getting used to, but the flow came naturally. And that flow (that feeling of moving together without words), that is exactly what distinguishes a good team.

After the action on the water, we concluded our day with a good BBQ, beers and sunshine.

We look back on an activity that really contributed to our teams' spirit. And honestly? We are convinced: active company activities are the best. Also want to build a close team and innovative solutions? Come along, call us, or... bring an oar.
