Apps and website for University Newspaper Mare

Zooma designed and developed the website and apps for Leids Universitair Weekblad Mare. The purpose of the website is to showcase the articles, photos and drawings in the best possible way. The app was developed to serve regular readers even better. With the app you will always have the latest Mare newspaper in your pocket!

Leids Universitair Weekblad Mare is the independent newspaper of Leiden University. Mare is well known in and around Leiden and exists since 1977, although its history goes back much further to 1931! In addition to the printed weekly, Weekblad Mare has started to focus more on online from 2019. With Zooma as digital partner!

Responsive website

Based on an extensive brainstorming session with Mare's team, Zooma first created the wireframes. This became the skeleton of the new website: this is where we determine the content and positioning of the website. We also determine the different "types" of pages in this phase: the website is designed so that Mare can create new pages herself.

While designing the website, much attention was given to the readability of the articles and clarity of the website as a whole. Therefore, for example, a lot of white space was used between both objects and lines of text. The main colors are white, red and black. These colors are based on Mare's existing corporate identity.

Finally, the development team quickly built the website: a fully responsive websites with micro-animations and a user-friendly CMS to publish the articles with.

iOS and Android apps

About a year after building the app, Zooma was commissioned to build the Mare app as well. The app was developed native; the menus, navigation, etc. were developed native, but the article detail pages were in-app web pages. The performance / speed of the app is not optimal with this technical solution, but it allowed us to quickly, and within budget, provide the regular users of Mare with beautiful apps.

The design of the app is based on the website. However, the layout of the app is slightly different from that of the website: in the app, the navigation bar is at the bottom instead of at the top. This allows the user to easily navigate through the menu items with their thumb. The app also has some additional features, namely being able to receive/send push notifications by news category, in-app viewing of the latest digital newspaper and sharing of articles.
