Hospital Hero: user test in the office

Zooma tested a first prototype of the Hospital Hero app (for the Willem Alexander Children's Hospital) together with a group of children. Since LUMC is not a good place to meet for a while (due to Covid19) we converted our office into a hospital. Where there is a will there is a way!

The goal of the Hospital Hero app is to provide children, and their parents, with the best possible information and help them relax during a hospital visit. This user test was all about testing the built-in games; choosing a favorite animal and searching for escaped 'Naturalis' animals in the hospital.

Upon entering, there was a makeshift reception desk; here we gave the children a brief introduction to the app. And furthermore, the office was divided into a large waiting room, a small waiting room and the blood drawing room. On the floor we placed animal footprints to show the children the way.

Together with pediatric nurses (the initiators of Hospital Hero) from LUMC, we observed the children as they got started with the app. The children were each given a test version of an app on a phone enthusiastically went looking for the animals. A clear success!

Of course, the test also provided valuable feedback. A child uses an app differently than an adult. Certain app parts were not immediately clear to the (youngest) children and we will take those points of improvement into the next development sprint. This way we are getting closer step by step to an app that we will launch 'for real' at LUMC!
