ASO - app store optimization

Zooma-developed apps (such as Timesquare) regularly top download lists. How do we achieve that? First of all, by building a good app, of course. But also by successfully applying App Store Optimization (ASO). This makes our apps easy to find and increases the chances of a download. In this blog we describe the most important aspects of ASO.

Appstore optimization is indispensable

Everyone has a smartphone: from your elderly grandmother to your nephew in kindergarten. Therefore, we are all using more and more apps as well. According to figures from Appannie, the number of downloads from the Google Playstore and the Apple Store actually increased by 60% last year. And we have an average of 80 apps on our smartphones.

Not surprisingly, more and more apps are appearing as a result. By the end of last year, there were even 3.5 million apps published on the Playstore. To stand out among all this app violence, ASO is indispensable. Good ASO gives apps a chance among the thousands of other apps that are also fighting for attention. In addition, ASO helps with conversion, so that users actually download and use your app. We will discuss both aspects in more detail.

Getting your app noticed

The app store offers several ways to put your app on the map. Some of them are within your control. So let's make the most of them:

Keywords

The right keywords can make or break the findability of your app. The trick is to put yourself in the user's shoes: which words would they use to search for your app? In addition, it is useful to take your competitors into account. What keywords do they use? Maybe you can come up with a smarter word!

Clear title

Luckily, your app is being found! Just like a hundred other apps that do similar things... A clear title makes all the difference. If it makes it immediately clear what your app does, chances are that your app will attract more interest. An additional advantage: this also puts your app higher up in the search results.

Featured apps

Every week several apps are selected for the front page of the appstore. That's a party! Hundreds of thousands of people see your app right away. However, you don't get here by accident. Only the most useful, reliable and highly reviewed apps get this honor. A great goal to aim for, then!

Convincing people to download

Congratulations, people are coming to your app page! So you're already a big step closer to a download. Now you want to give them that final push. Here's how to do it:

Neat graphics

People are visually oriented. For millions of years, we've been making decisions based on what we see. So when we see an ugly icon, we associate it with an unreliable product. The same goes for the screenshots you include. Show what users can do with your product. Where for them lies the added value of your app.

Clear text

The accompanying text is just as important. Spelling mistakes or meaningless nonsense? Next app! In the PlayStore, in 255 characters, you have the chance to show what your app does better than all the others. Take that chance. You can describe it further in the additional text. Also not unimportant, because the appstore gets information from this for your findability.

Positive reviews

Do you like the title, images and text? Then the reviews get our attention. We prefer to download only apps that get high marks. Still, bad reviews do not have to be a disaster. It gives you a chance to address bugs and explain what went wrong. So if you respond well to a complaint, it can still make a positive contribution.

Many downloads and loyal users

As you can see, ASO is indispensable for getting those coveted downloads. The great thing is that good app store optimization works both ways. You get found ánd you attract the users who see the value of your app. Chances are, in addition to an extra download, you'll gain an active user. And that's what it's all about in the end: active users.
